Keegan Pedals Coast-to-Coast for Polio

Bob KeeganOn August 10, 2007, Bob Keegan dipped the tires of his bike into the Atlantic Ocean. It seemed a fitting thing to do after cycling from coast-to-coast – from Florence, OR, to Yorktown, VA – a journey of approximately 4,165 miles.

Cycling cross-country was a longtime dream of Keegan’s, who retired from CDC in March 2007 after 33 years of service. He also used his trip as an opportunity to raise funds for the global fight against polio, asking that donations be made to support the polio eradication initiatives of the CDC Foundation and Rotary International. As of August 2007, Keegan’s journey had raised approximately $30,000.

“I hope this trip has inspired others to take time to fulfill their dreams,” says Keegan. “We humans have the capability of turning dreams into reality far more often than we think. Along the way, maybe we can make the world a better place. Polio eradication is one way to make a difference. What is your dream? How will you make a difference? Don’t wait too long!”
